Luis Ortuzar

Soldier. He was Head of the Basque Police Force during the 1936-39 war and was officially appointed Inspector General for Public Order on 3rd November 1936 by the Basque Government.

Marcelino Bañales Tajada

Painter. He was born in the district of Kardeo in 1942 although he grew up in the district of La Cuesta. He died in 1990. "If Zierbena had a painter, Gallarta also won his heart", wrote M.A. Marrodan.

When studying the paintings of Marcelino Bañales, we find three main themes: the Mines, the area of Baztán, and his native Zierbena.

Cyclist. He was born in the district of La Arena in 1940. His list of triumphs is so long that it would be almost impossible to write it here. His greatest achievement was coming 4th in the Tour of France in 1966.

Cyclist. He was born in the district of La Arena in 1941. He also has an incredible list of triumphs, which would be impossible to summarise in just a few lines.

Guillermo Bañales Alonso

Mountain. Been born in La Cuesta in 1966. Between its expeditions they emphasize: the one of the Geographic North Pole in 2002, becoming the first expeditionary Basoue in arriving at the North Pole next to Josu Feijoo. And the one of the Geographic South Pole, in which, next to its companions of expedition, Angel Navas and Josu Feijoo, they have been the first expeditionary ones of the state in both covering poles in the same year.

Francisco de Murrieta

Spanish-American. He was born in the district of Kardeo in 1785 and died in Buenos Aires in 1865. In his will and testament, he bequeathed a large amount of money for building the current parish church of San Román.

Germán Campo

Athlete. He was born in the district of San Mames in 1903 and died in 1979. He had many triumphs, both at county and national level and participated internationally three times.
