
Zierbena stands at the north-western end of the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country. The municipality stands among mountains, facing north towards the Bay of Biscay.
It comprises six main areas: La Cuesta, La Arena, El Puerto, Valle, Kardeo and San Mamés. The people of Zierbena have traditionally been sailors and fishermen. The town lies in the Somorrostro Valley, one of the nine valleys that make up the district of Las Encartaciones.
Modern-day Zierbena revolves around operations at the port of Bilbao, thanks to which the town is high on the list of major European ports.
